About Us

Laundry Day Book Club

A group of volunteers who love reading and sharing stories with young children in laundromats

Reading to children is one of the best ways to foster their imagination, curiosity, and learning. Reading to children can also help them develop their language, literacy, and social skills, as well as their emotional and cognitive development.

That’s why we offer free in-person sessions at laundromats where we read books to children aged 3 to 8, in a fun and interactive way. We have a wide selection of books to choose from, covering various topics, genres, and cultures. Before leaving the book reading session each child is given a copy of a book that has been read. We also encourage children to ask questions, express their opinions, and share their own stories.

Children that are not accompanying a parent or guardian to the laundromat can watch videos of people reading books online.

If you are interested in joining us as a volunteer, please contact us. We would love to hear from you and welcome you to our community.

Thank you for visiting our website and supporting our cause. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children and their families.

Improved language skills

This is because reading to your children in the earliest months stimulates the part of the brain that allows them to understand the meaning of language and helps build key language, literacy and social skills. Reading to children at an early age has many benefits for their cognitive, language, and social development. Some of the benefits are:

  • Reading improves children’s listening skills and comprehension, which are essential for learning to read themselves34.
  • Reading exposes children to a rich and varied vocabulary, which enhances their communication and literacy skills25.
  • Reading stimulates children’s imagination and curiosity, and expands their understanding of the world35.

Reading to children is a simple and enjoyable activity that can have lasting positive effects on their lives. Reading is most beneficial as part of a daily routine, but any time is good. The most important thing is to make reading fun and meaningful for your child.
